Discovery finds out whether you can help, and qualification decides whether the deal can close. Together they save you from months chasing the wrong prospects.
The discovery call is the most important meeting in a B2B sale. It is where you find out whether the prospect has a real problem you can solve, whether they will spend money on it and how they make decisions. Tech founders who skip discovery and go straight to a demo end up showing features to people who will never buy. Good discovery shortens the sales cycle because it removes poor-fit deals early and gives you what you need to tailor the demo and proposal.
Spend 15 minutes researching the organisation and the person: their role, recent news, likely priorities and what they use today. Write three hypotheses about their problem and the questions that would test them. Send a short agenda in advance so they know what to expect.
A good 30-minute discovery call has four parts:
Aim for the prospect to talk most of the time. Take notes in their words.
Use a simple checklist. Many sales teams use frameworks such as BANT or MEDDIC; a lighter version for an early tech startup covers:
If two or more are weak, the deal is unlikely to close soon. Say so honestly and agree a later check-in, or walk away.
Within the hour, record the answers in your CRM and send a short follow-up email summarising what you heard, the impact they described and the agreed next step. Buyers often forward this internally, so it becomes your champion’s briefing note.
A good follow-up email has four short parts: “Here is what I heard” (the problem and its impact in their words), “Here is what I think we could do” (one or two sentences), “Here is what happens next” (the date and who should attend), and a request to correct anything you got wrong. Corrections are valuable; they show the buyer is engaged.
Stockpot, a fictional Sheffield tech startup selling stock control to independent restaurants, used to demo on every first call. After introducing a 20-minute discovery call, the founder found that restaurants with a single site and no head chef rarely bought, while small groups of three to eight sites, recently hit by supplier price rises, bought quickly. She started politely declining single-site demos and offering them a self-serve trial instead. Her time per customer won dropped sharply.
Volunteer sales development representatives can book and prepare discovery calls, research each prospect and write up notes against your qualification checklist.
