Referred customers tend to trust you sooner and buy faster. Word of mouth rarely happens by accident; you can design for it.
A recommendation from a peer carries more weight than anything you can say about yourself. Referred prospects arrive with trust already built, so they often buy faster and stay longer. Yet most tech startups leave referrals to chance. A small, deliberate programme can make word of mouth one of your most efficient channels, and it compounds as your customer base grows.
No programme fixes a product people do not love. Check your product–market fit score and retention. Customers refer when they have had a clear win, so make sure onboarding gets them to that first win quickly. The customer success playbook covers this.
Ask when satisfaction is highest: just after a successful go-live, when a customer reports a result, after a positive support interaction, or when they renew or upgrade. A simple satisfaction question (“How likely are you to recommend us?”) helps you spot promoters to ask and detractors to help.
“Do you know anyone who might be interested?” rarely works. Better: “You mentioned you are in a regional group of care agency owners. Is there one person there who struggles with rotas the way you did? I can send a short note you could forward.” Give them a two-line description and a link they can share.
A good forwardable note is short: who you are, the problem you solve for businesses like theirs, one result the referrer achieved (with their permission), and an easy next step. When the referral arrives, reply within a day, copy the referrer if they are happy for you to, and treat the prospect as a priority. Afterwards, tell the referrer how it went, whatever the outcome.
In B2B, many customers refer to help a peer or look good, not for a reward. Thank-yous such as a handwritten note, a donation to a charity of their choice or an account credit often fit better than cash. If you do offer incentives, check whether the referrer’s employer has rules about gifts, keep it transparent and record it. For B2C, a two-sided credit for both referrer and new customer is a common pattern.
Rotabloom, the fictional Manchester scheduling tech startup, added a referral moment to its 60-day check-in call. When the customer confirmed time saved, the account manager asked whether they knew one other agency owner facing the same problem, and offered a ready-to-forward email. Referrers received a thank-you card and a donation to a care charity. Referrals rose from occasional to a steady few each month, and those deals closed faster than any other source.
Volunteer customer marketers can run your referral asks, write case studies, collect reviews and track referral sources, so word of mouth becomes a managed channel.
